Jasbir Singh

After a very educational PhD with Dan Rich at University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a start in the pharmaceuticals industry which spanned many successful years at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute and subsequently serving as Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Cephalon, Jasbir spent the last 8 years (2001-2009) as the VP of Medicinal Chemistry at deCode Chemistry.

Some of his key accomplishments during 2001-2009 include:

• Built medicinal chemistry department from ground up through re-organization and recruitment of senior scientists.
• Managed a staff of up to 50 scientists, with Associate Directors, Group Leaders, and Senior Scientist level direct reports; a staff that included capabilities in modern synthetic/medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry, structure-based and data-focused drug design, in-vitro/predictive ADME/DMPK, bioanalytical (including GLP) and pre-clinical formulation.
• Organized and led successful multisite, multidisciplinary teams that included over 100 scientists from chemistry, structure biology, and pharmacology departments.
  Advanced three (3) first in-class compounds to clinical evaluations from 2002-2009. These compounds are currently in clinical trials.
• Coordinated and managed timelines from pre-candidate through clinical candidate selection; managed IND enabling studies and closely worked with development/clinical team members to IND submission.
• Served as chairperson and a member of the JRC of a multiyear (2003-2008) industry-academia-foundation collaborative program.
• Led the team effort for the development of small molecule therapeutics for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a program funded by FSMA (Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy),a disease foundation. This work culminated in the identification of a clinical candidate.
• Coordinated and managed IND-enabling GLP toxicology and safety pharmacology studies in conjunction with the FSMA Toxicology Consultant.
• Supported and managed all non-GLP and GLP bioanalytical activities.
• Responsible for all interactions with the external law firm for internal and collaborative projects patent related activities.
• Filed over 40 patents.
• Negotiated and managed activities with US, European, and Asian CROs.

In addition to internal projects, worked closely with business development staff and supported multimillion dollar annual external medicinal chemistry business.
In response to demand from customers, spearheaded and launched new services 'Bioanalytical and PK Services' for external customers during 2008; during the first six month period brought in $0.25M worth of new business revenue.
